Abhay Ashtekar received an Honorary Ph.D. (Doctor Rerum Naturalium Honoris Casua) from the Friedrich Schiller Universitaet, Jena, Germany, which was created through an imperial decree in 1558. It has had a distinguished tradition in General Relativity and Gravitation and hosted an 9th tri-annual international GRG conference in 1980. The degree was awarded on 27th of September 2005, the 100th anniversary of the submission of Einstein's E=Mc² paper.

Hanno Sahlmann won the 2005 "Akademiepreis fuer Physik" of the Gottingen Academy of Sciences. The citation states that the prize is being awarded for "important contributions to Loop Quantum Gravity, a promising framework for the quantization of Einstein's General Relativity." The key contribution was the seminal uniqueness result (for the representation of the quantum algebra used in quantum geometry) established this year, based on Hanno's seminal ideas and the sustained follow-up contributions made by him at IGPG.
Parampreet Singh won the V.V. Narlikar Dissertation award of the Indian Association for General Relativity and Gravitation. All dissertations in Gravitation submitted to an Indian University between 2001 and 2004 were eligible for this competition.
Amber Stuver was elected to the APS's Forum on Graduate Student Affairs (FSGA) as a member at large. She will be the first Penn State student to serve on this Forum in more than a decade.
Martin Bojowald's profile was featured in the January 6, 2005 issue of Nature under the heading "The long distance thinker." Most of his research described in the article was carried out at IGPG. (PDF)
